As expected, the separated nature of the followers of Myrkul across the Sword Cost of Faerun posed no challenge to Myrkul when it came time for him to call them to duty. Independently, and in response to their own visions and calls to service, the individual knights journeyed over varying distances to arrive simultaneously outside of The Obsidian Spire. Elder Doom Bloodgrave stepped out and welcomed the followers of Myrkul to enter and learn of their Lords will.
As Bloodgrave spoke, the task at hand became clear. Myrkul requires a vanguard of loyal vassals to venture forth into a new realm and spread his influence and offer his release from the curse of life to yet another world. The world of Azeroth must feel the cold embrace of Myrkul.
Transportation was announced to be provided by the Spelljamming ship that has been provided by Myrkuls providence to his most devoted followers. A map of the new realm was provided by Bloodgrave and each member of Myrkuls Vanguard was provided a blood red ring with which they would be able to communicate with not only each other, but with Myrkuls chosen leaders across the realms.
Additionally, Vaniah and Rohanon were each provided with an 8” long, obsidian spire. The purpose of these spires has not yet been revealed, but Bloodgrave gave assurance that their purpose would be revealed in time. For now, keep them hidden and protected until called upon to use them.
The following morning, undaunted by the task before them, Myrkuls vanguard set out aboard the Spelljammer, in route to the certainty of a world ripe for the salvation of Myrkul.
Upon arrival, they faced a jungle environment and with the promise of civilization nearby, immediately set out to explore and find their route to the souls that Myrkul craves. Along the way, various denizens of the environment attempted in their own way to slow the progress of the dauntless team, to no avail. Creatures such as an Alligator, Jungle Spiders, Skeletons (pathetic creations, unsanctioned by Myrkul) and even a Raptor fell quickly to the jungle floor, barely slowing the advance.
Eventually the team came across a wounded Troll, barely clinging to life. In the interest of gaining information, though distasteful, it was decided the best course of action was to revive the fallen individual, granting a temporary reprieve from the embrace of Myrkul.
The individual, named Zekar, proved to be an individual haling from the town nearby. It soon came to light that while out searching for a lost treasure in the nearby islands, a team of explorers from this town had fallen victim to Orc raiders. The chieftain’s son was captured and Zekar had been attempting to search for further evidence of the location of the Orcs when he had the unfortunate luck to meet the Raptor that had only recently been dispatched by the followers of Myrkul.
After some negotiation, it was decided that the team would assist in rescuing the Chiefs son, in exchange for information on the “treasure” and an introduction to the Chief that would be sure to follow. Any expedition, after all, needs funding and introduction to those in leadership positions to ascertain the best ways to ensure Myrkuls vision is realized.
After a nights rest, the crew set forth on a boat and soon landed at a small island where Zekar assured us there should be two temples and most likely the Orcish forces that had captured the Chiefs son. Soon, a fork in the path was found, leading to the two separate temples.
Opting to go “left” first, the team quickly discovered a chest atop what appeared to be an alter like structure. Though the chest was trapped, such things, and the damage involved, proved no deterrent to bravery (bravado?) of Myrkuls chosen. The chest contained the bounty of 250gp to further Myrkuls desires.
Atop the pyramid structure that was located behind this altar, the team discovered an Emerald colored spherical object of magical properties. Thankfully, Zekar was ordered to identify the object and as expected, he followed the directions of his superiors and quickly did so. The item proved to be an Arcane Emeraldstone, an item perfectly suited to enhance the Mykrul granted abilities of Vaniah, and it was quickly decided she would wield the item as soon as she is able to attune to it.
Backtracking to the righthand path, the team quickly discovered the second temple to be guarded, as expected, by orcish forces. Obtaining the element of surprise, the team attacked. Sometimes the simplest strategy is, well, just simpler!
Battle was quickly joined, and the orcs began to fall like rows of wheat at the harvest. While this proved to be the first challenge Myrkuls faithful had faced, and despite Rohanon falling only to be almost immediately brought back into the fight by Rayven and a timely healing potion, the foregone conclusion of victory was quickly accomplished.
The Chiefs son was rescued from where he was being held within the temple and after some rather frustrating searching, a hidden entrance at the base and rear of the temple was discovered. Within was a large room with 6 chests in a line across the back. It was quickly asserted that an area of tiles on the floor was suspicious and quickly the hidden treasure store within the floor was discovered and rightfully plundered in the name of Myrkul. Included with the gold was a tablet, evidence towards the greater treasure contained somewhere within this island chain. Rayven did insist on “checking” the chests that lined the back of the room, each of which was trapped, and most of which were empty. Bloodied by undeterred, he assured the team through effort alone, that nothing in fact was being left behind that could prove useful to Myrkuls will.
As the team made camp for the night in front of the temple, a sense of eager anticipation permeated the thoughts, conversation and even the dreams of Myrkuls faithful. What will tomorrow bring?
